Revealed to press this past Wednesday, Homefront: The Revolution is being developed by the talented folks over at Crytek.
You know, the guys behind the Crysis series. And that is very much a good thing. Now, that’s not to say the original was awful. Yours truly quite enjoyed it, but wished it would’ve built on certain ideas in both the single and multiplayer parts of the game. From the short look I had at the game, it seems like Crytek will have the time and balls to do exactly that. Have a look at the game’s official description below.
Homefront: The Revolution is an open-world first person shooter where you must lead the Resistance movement and wage guerrilla warfare against a superior military force.
A living, breathing, open world responds to your actions – you and your Resistance Cell can inspire a rebellion on the streets and turn Occupation into Revolution, as oppressed civilians take up the fight.
But your enemy has an overwhelming advantage. To succeed, you must learn the art of guerrilla warfare – ambush, sabotage, infiltration, deception – and fight a running battle through the war-ravaged suburbs of Philadelphia.
Hopefully by reading that snippet of information, looking at the screenshots below and watching the short trailer you’ll get exactly what I mean. It’s still set in the same universe as the original and remains a first-person shooter, but introducing the open-world (described as dynamic to boot) aspect and different play styles means that the ‘Revolution’ part of the title really stands out. This was apparent in the short gameplay section I witnessed as you and your comrades are tasked with breaking into an enemy stronghold. You can go in all guns blazing (a risky tactic) or you can use the materials at your disposal, build a little RC car and cause some stealthier chaos to get access. You can do this is all with friends too, as Homefront: The Revolution will feature four player drop in, drop out co-op. Yay!
Oh and it looks absolutely gorgeous, something that I don’t think the screenshots and trailer actually do justice to. Now, I know it’s early days for next-gen systems, but so far (key words) it’s arguably the most impressive first-person shooter I’ve seen on the PS4 and Xbox One. The character models, environment and lighting is all gorgeous, but it is the awesome CryEngine after all. Oh yeah, that’s right, it’s coming to both systems despite certain “inside” information on forums. Add PC, Linux and Mac to that list too by the way.
With more to be revealed at E3 in the coming week, I’m genuinely very interested to see what Crytek can deliver with Homefront: The Revolution. The taster on Wednesday certainly left me wanting more, and if you’re into the genre then you should be keep a close eye on it too before its 2015 release date.
